Club Marine NSW Youth Match Racing Championship Day 1 runs to form

The form guide at the Club Marine NSW Youth Match Racing Championship sailed true on Day 1 with the top four ranked skippers heading into the event all securing a spot in the semi-finals, leaving the five remaining teams to battle it out in the repechage round tomorrow, Sunday 5 August 2018.

With a gusty and extremely shifty westerly breeze on Sydney Harbour, with winds ranging from 6-26 knots, the Race Committee managed to complete the full round-robin of 36 races. For the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, it was a great day for the club, with all three teams advancing to the semi-finals, with Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron’s Nick Rozenauers looking to spoil the CYCA party, booking himself a spot after finishing second only on countback from James Hodgson (CYCA) whom both only lost one race today.

The highest ranked competitor in the regatta, CYCA’s Tom Grimes finished the round in third place, one point further back after losses to Rozenauers and Newcastle’s Thomas Steenson. The conditions tested all crews from the five yacht clubs competing with Finn Tapper (CYCA) also tied on four points with Victorian entry, Sandringham Yacht Club, skippered by Hayden Brown, who fought hard for a semi-final berth but missed out to Tapper due to their match up.

Tomorrow will see a repechage round robin for the minor regatta places, with points resetting for the next stage, allowing for redemption for some teams, whilst the semi-finalists will hit it out against one another for a spot in the all-important Finals. Racing will begin at 0930hrs in the vicinity of Rushcutters Bay with live results posted via the CYCA website.
