The 2018 Sydney Harbour Regatta went out with a blast as the forecast strong southerly, contrasting with Saturday's ideal nor’ easter, meant abandoning racing on some courses, while the remainder were tested to the max.

David Staley, Sailing Manager for Middle Harbour Yacht Club which hosts the event, explained: “The wind was all over the shop and varied on different parts of the Harbour. We recorded 28 knots gusting into the mid-30s at the Wedding Cake, 18 to 20 knots on the Sound and 15 plus at Rushcutters Bay.

“It was choppy on a big swell off the Heads, so we brought the Open (IRC/ORCi) divisions and the Sydney 38s inside to do one race on the Harbour – and got them away on time. We managed to get in as much racing as we could with what we had,” Staley said.

Across the weekend of racing there were some excellent results for CYCA members in the series scores. In the J70 division, Reg Lord's Juno took the win while Stephen O'Halloran topped the Cavalier 28 division in his boat Blind Justice.

It was also a win for former Tattersall Cup winner Darryl Hodgkinson in Victoire in the Super 12s division, and for Andrew York in the Sports Boat division with REO Speedwagon.

Taking out ORCi in the Open Class Div 1 was Paul Clitheroe's TP52, Balance, while Zoe Taylor won Open Class Div 2 on ORCi with her boat Grace O'Malley.

Fresh from strong performances in the Ocean Pointscore, Ed Psaltis topped Open Class Div 2 on IRC, while CYCA Vice Commodore Paul Billingham secured the win on PHS in the Performance - Non Spin Div 1. A very welcome result for the VC who was ably supported by the CYCA Commodore John Markos over the weekend's racing.

Billingham commented, "Day 1 was perfect sailing with winds in the 12-18kt range in the harbour and we scored two third places. We hoped for stronger wind on Day 2, which Defiant prefers, and it delivered with winds at 25kts+. We were third overnight and after a great first race with reefed main and number 4 on Sunday, moved up to second.

"A disastrous start in the final race saw us round mark one in last place, so we gambled on the downwind leg and shook the reef out, moving up to fourth at the second mark. Great crew work in 25kts+ saw us hold it together on the longer upwind leg, avoid the 18-footer carnage and tie for first in the race to take out the regatta by 2 points.

"Great to have John Markos with us on Day 2 adding not only some much needed ballast, but helping call tactics and coach the trimmers. Our Board should sail together more often!!"
