Re-vamped Sydney-Hobart veterans race for April 28

As the 75th anniversary of the Sydney-Hobart race approaches, the local offshore community has come together to reinvigorate the annual “Great Veterans Race”.

Now in its 30th year, the race for the Windward Trophy has lately had difficulty establishing a distinct presence alongside the other off-season events on Sydney Harbour.

This year’s race will be staged as a stand alone event by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia on April 28.

For the first time it will be contested from handicap starts, a “stern chaser” format that proved popular during the recent Admiral’s Cup Anniversary Regatta.

The Sydney-Hobart Great Veterans Yacht Race is open to any yacht that competed in the S-H prior to 1975, or was launched before 1975 and competed in the race subsequently. It will be a “no extras” event.

Yachts that have already lodged their entries include some of the most famous names in Australian offshore racing history.

Fidelis, Maris, Josephine and Mister Christian will be joined by the recently-restored Solveig, one of the few yachts to have won both handicap and line honours in the Sydney-Hobart.

Participation in the 2018 Great Veterans Race is an opportunity to actively celebrate our nation’s unique blue-water sailing heritage.

Entries are now open through the following link:

Should your vessel not meet the initial entry criteria, however you would like to be invited to participate, please email the CYCA Sailing Office via or call +61 2 8292 7870 expressing your interest. Entries close 1200 26th April.
