Sunday saw Race 1 of the Short Haul Pointscore welcome a solid fleet for the Monica Geddes Memorial Trophy Race, traditionally the Summer Season opening event.

This year saw the 21st running of the race held around the islands in Sydney Harbour.

A consistent breeze of around 10 knots ensured good sailing conditions with a notable winner topping Division 4 of the PHS handicap, the division for which the Monica Geddes Memorial Trophy is handed out.

Bill Mirow’s Beneteau First 345, Privateer, picked up the trophy back in 2006 then again in 2008. 2017 was the record-equaling third win for Mirow, matching LADY ANN’s impressive history.

“I don’t know why it is we do so well in that race,” said Bill Mirow after the race. “The wind was better than we expected. The forecast wasn’t that great but in fact there was a light breeze that got a bit stronger which suited us fine, we don’t go too well in light wind.”

One of the notable appeals of the Monica Geddes Memorial Trophy is the course used as Mirow highlighted, “It’s interesting because we normally don’t race on the western side of the harbour bridge. It can be a challenge; the winds are hard to predict and the it funnels through under the bridge.”

There’s certainly some bumpy water with all the ferries but they were fairly tolerant of us, we had great fun and the crew enjoyed it.”

With plans to compete in some of the upcoming Short Haul races the Privateer skipper is enjoying racking up successful miles in the harbour of late and plans to add a few more.

“That boat of ours is 30 years old and we’ve been racing and using it for social purposes that whole time. We’re still very much enjoying sailing on it and I intend to keep doing so for as long as I can.”
