The CYCA Top Jocks Regatta came down to a battle of the Sydney 38 teams with Richard Williams Team Calibre securing the title of 2017 Champion of Champions ahead of the Phil Tomkin’s Team Next in glorious Autumn conditions on Sydney Harbour.

Light conditions greeted the six competitors on Saturday morning, prompting Principal Race Officer Denis Thompson to delay the start while the north easterly breeze came down the harbour to the initial racing area in between Clarke and Shark Islands.

Racing eventually got underway with two windward/leeward’s races taking place, before the first of two short harbour courses. A new feature in the 2017 Top Jocks Series, the short passage races saw the competitors sail from the traditional windward/leeward starting area, to Nielson Park, around Shark and Clarke Islands, with a finish in Rushcutters Bay. The near hour long race providing competitors an opportunity to both ‘stretch their legs’ and experience the full range of capabilities of the Youth Sailing Academy’s Elliott 7.0 fleet.

“We enjoyed the short passage races, the longer races were a good opportunity for skipper and crew to settle in and simply sail the yacht - a nice addition to the event”, said a delighted Williams, after learning of his success in capturing the regatta.

The passage races proved the difference for Williams and his crew, who took the win in both of the longer races, adding to a win in the third of the windward/leeward races, helping secure his team a six-point win over second placed E7.0 Next.

“We had a great day on the water, we were able to get into the groove early on and were able to sail consistently.” said Williams.

Whilst the competitors were contesting the first short passage race, and taking advantage of a consistent breeze, the Race Committee took the opportunity to shift the course into Rushcutters Bay for the afternoon program.

A further two windward/leewards were conducted, which proved successful for those competitors more used to the shorter courses and usual sailing. CYCA Director Tony Kirby picking up his second win of the day to help move the Patrice Yacht Racing Team onto the podium in third place.

The final race of the day was a short passage race around Shark and Clarke Islands, before all competitors sailed back to the CYCA for after race refreshments and share stories of their small boat experience.

Presentation was held on the CYCA deck with all teams receiving prizes from CYCA Summer Series sponsors Makers Mark and Club Marine.

Sebastian Bohm and his team from The Goat took home the Nice Guys Finish Last award, whilst Richard Williams and Team Calibre have added their names to the CYCA Top Jocks trophy for 2017.
