Message from the CEO

Belated 50 Year Member Presentation

Last Friday night the Commodore John Markos presented a 50 year Member with his badge. Richard Hall (pictured left) was absent from the AGM in July as he now lives overseas, but during a visit back to Sydney we were able to belatedly arrange a presentation.

Sailing Talent on Show

The cream of the CYCA’s youth sailing talent also gathered last Friday night for the Annual Presentation Night. The full list of winners and photos from the event can be found at this link.

‘Roof’-urbishment Update

This week should see the completion, or near completion, of the new roof on the adjoining annex (weather permitting).  Once the building is water-tight, there will be a flurry of trade activity as the new internal layout starts to take shape.

Comanche, as well as Clippers, heading back to Sydney

The 2015 Line Honours winner Comanche from the USA has now entered the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2017 becoming the third entry from the USA.

We have nine International boats including USA (3), Hong Kong (2), France, Italy, NZ and China, with 40 entries all up to date.

Yesterday in Liverpool, 247 Clipper crew Members boarded their 12 yachts and set sail from Albert Dock (pictured). Leaving behind family, friends and supporters, the fleet will now not see land for around four weeks.

We hope to see them here in Sydney from around 14 December when they gather at the CYCA to prepare for their participation in this year’s race.

Volunteer Applications for RSHYR 2017

With an even busier RSHYR 2017 with the Clippers on-site and a large contingent of international crew (26 different nationalities in 2016), we are keen to update our Volunteers’ skills register, including languages spoken by volunteers. The latter will assist in allocating ‘Liaison Officers’ to each of our visiting, international boats and assist the international crew Members on board other boats.

Following advice from our insurance broker, we now have a more comprehensive Application Form which must be completed by all volunteers to comply with work, health and safety best practice.  Please complete the form on the website to participate in this year’s event.

PONANT Cruise Information Sessions

Put 24 October in your diary when PONANT, the world leader in luxury expeditions and sponsor of the CYCA's PONANT Sydney Noumea Race 2018, is staging two information sessions (1400hrs and 1800hrs) at the CYCA for Members and guests. The events will focus on their ships L’Austral and Le Soleal which are both based in Australia from December through to March each year.

PONANT passengers cruise in luxury comfort to beautiful locations such as Darwin, the Grenadine Islands and Port Villa as well as the Antarctic, Milford Sound, Martinique and Argentina. For more information please click this link.

In closing

In what is now becoming almost a weekly occurrence somewhere in the world of senseless violence against innocent people, our thoughts and prayers are with the Cadman family and all other families impacted by this latest tragedy in Barcelona.

We can’t live in fear of what might happen, but we can and must be vigilant.

Karen Grega

Chief Executive Officer
