Onshore Edition 131 - Monday 7 August
Message from the CEO

The last seven days offered up a plethora of sailing events with local and international success for the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy.

Firstly, H.A.T.s off to our new World Champs - Harry Price, Angus Williams and Tara Blanc-Ramos (pictured) who took out the World Sailing Youth Match Racing World Championships over the weekend in California. Such an amazing result and many of the social media comments and photos say it all

It’s ALSO amazing to think of Tara, one moment working her way through the paper work for the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Race in the sailing office with Olivia Price, then the next minute she's part of a team working its way through the competition on the water off Newport Beach before celebrating as a World Champion!

Closer to home, James Hodgson, Tim Westwood and Charlie and Cam Gundy took out the honours in the Club Marine NSW Youth MR Championship yesterday. Many thanks to sponsor Club Marine for their ongoing support of this event and the club generally.

And for the marginally older age group, the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Race 2017, the CYCA’s second busiest race of the year, saw Komatsu Azzurro the overall winner of this year’s event, after Wild Oats XI crossed the finish line first to narrowly take line honours after a tight tussle with Black Jack.

At the prize-giving, the ‘ever-shy and retiring’ Shane Kearns didn’t disappoint with his trophy acceptance speech. Well done to skipper and crew of Komatsu Azzurro and to our finishing partner for the event, Southport Yacht Club - their race volunteers and club staff.

Last year I didn’t manage to get up to Southport, but this year it was great to be able to visit the radio room and meet the team and voices behind the scenes and watch a few boat cross the finish line….and of course, the club itself is quite the social hub for crew, family and friends.

Well done also to our Sailing Office with Stephen Craig at the helm this year and CYCA race committee/volunteers for a successful event following a few curve balls in the lead up. No doubt Denis and Lynne will be dining on stories of their ‘adventures’ driving up the coast for some time.

Again we must also acknowledge our event sponsor.

Land Rover, our Winter Series and LRSGC sponsor, has been a great off-water partner to work with and their support over the past few years is much appreciated.

Whilst there is still much sailing at this time of the year north of the border, back at the CYCA sailing continues with Race 1 of the Spring Series commencing this week.

Our stage 1 refurbishment also continues to be on track and we aim to be ensconced in our new offices in November. This Thursday the public exhibition period concludes for the section 96 application for our temporary clubhouse on the hardstand during Stage 2 works.

Strong performers from the CYCA in the 2018 Sydney Harbour Regatta

The 2018 Sydney Harbour Regatta went out with a blast as the forecast strong southerly, contrasting with Saturday's ideal nor’ easter, meant abandoning racing on some courses, while the remainder were tested to the max.
