Onshore Edition 130 - Monday 31 July
Message from the CEO

Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race 2017

From the perspective of being on the start boat, when the cannon fired for the start of the race you’d be forgiven for thinking that no-one had heard it, or you were looking at a photograph of the race start, given the lack of movement.

But Wild Oats XI soon broke away, taking out Line Honours in this year’s Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, crossing the finishing line at 7.37am this morning in a time of 01:18:37:06, with Black Jack hot on their heels finishing three minutes and 31 seconds later.

If you missed the start of the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Race 2017 you can see this year’s fleet up close by going to the race website here and Facebook page here.

Both sites will take you to YouTube where there is some excellent drone footage (sponsored by Noakes Boat and Shipyards) with commentary by Sean Langman and Olivia Price and hosted by CYCA Communications/Marketing Manager Ross MacDonald. Special thanks also to Dale and Crosbie Lorimer for the Bow Caddy Wrap footage.

Photographic wrap of the day is also available with a selection of photographs taken by Andrea Francolini.

A final thanks to our much-valued sponsor Land Rover for their support of this event and the Winter Series. We were fortunate to have their new Discovery on display on the hardstand in the days leading up to Saturday’s Race.  Check out the new model here.

SPIRIT OF CRUISING - Tuesday 1 August 2017

CYCA Rani Room — 6.30pm

Guest Speakers; Evan Hodge and Kelly Clark of Nashira, a Bavaria Ocean 40, share their passion, preparation and anxiety as they prepared for their first cruising adventure to Tasmania.

Very new to yachting Evan, who had experience sailing dinghies and skiffs as a young boy, faced new challenges sailing as an 'above knee' amputee and Kelly having never sailed, embarked on a 6 day sailing course which ultimately changed the trajectory of their lives. They bought Nashira 3 months later.

Two and a half years after buying the boat they headed off on a 10 week adventure to Tasmania, crossing Bass Strait, sailing down the East Coast, then down and around to Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour.

They will share stories and photos of their trip including the preparation around safety, communications, victualing, route and weather planning and the anxiety of the unknown.

$30.00 for Spirit of Cruising dinner and meeting in the Rani Room.
