Onshore Edition 125 - Monday 26 June
Message from the CEO

America’s Cup Final replayed in the club from 7.30am tomorrow

Without wishing to put the mockers on Emirates Team New Zealand, they are just one win away from match point and lifting the 2017 America's Cup after two wins took their tally to 6-1 this morning over Oracle Team USA.

With replay coverage from 7.30am tomorrow morning (Tuesday), we are opening the bistro and bar from 7am in the hope of seeing our neighbours from across the ditch lift the trophy and put to rest ghosts from San Francisco four years ago and that’s all I’ll say on that!

So have your breakfast at the club and hopefully celebrate a Kiwi win - not often we’re happy saying that, but this is certainly one of those occasions.

YSA Success

Please join me in extending huge congratulations to the young talent and staff of the CYCA's Youth Sailing Academy after a double win over the weekend.

For the first time since 2008, the Development Match Racing Squad took out the top spot in the Interclub Series, while another team from the Advanced Squad program took victory in the Shelving Systems Match Cup.

It's fantastic to see the teams doing so well and we look forward to following their continued progress. Well done.

EOFY Donations

With only four days left in this tax year, if you are looking at dispensing with any excess funds in your budget for 2016-2017, CYCA SOLAS Trusts and/or the Youth Sailing Academy would welcome donations.

The CYCA SOLAS Trusts are a recognised deductible gift recipient (DGR) by the Australian Taxation Office with donations of $2.00 or more tax deductible. Likewise the Youth Sailing Academy is registered by the CYCA as a project with the Australian Sports Foundation Ltd (ASF) which enables voluntary donations to the ASF in support of the project to be tax deductible.

Please find the SOLAS form here and the YSA ASF form here

Cruising Committee talk on Japanese midget sub attack on Sydney Harbour

On July 4 at 6.30pm in the Freya room we will be holding an information on the Japanese Submarine attack on Sydney Harbour. You may ask how does this historical event involve the CYCA?

Well on the night this attack took place a number those involved in the harbour defence at the time later went on to became some of the foundation members of the CYCA, they were Peter Luke (Wayfarer) and Charlie Cooper (Asgard);  and that it was the ketch 'Lauriana' that was on duty at the Anti Submarine boom that night. ‘Lauriana' first spotted the submarines after which, when the depth charges were dropped in an attempt to destroy them, she was reportedly lifted out of the water by the force of the explosions.

This will be a night full of information and will be of particular interest to anyone who is familiar with the harbour as when they hear the stories unfold they will recognise where the events happened.

It's a free event so please bring your crew and friends along as the Bistro and bars will be open, all we ask is that you let us know you are coming by registering here.

SPIRIT OF CRUISING - Tuesday 1 August 2017

CYCA Rani Room — 6.30pm

Guest Speakers; Evan Hodge and Kelly Clark of Nashira, a Bavaria Ocean 40, share their passion, preparation and anxiety as they prepared for their first cruising adventure to Tasmania.

Very new to yachting Evan, who had experience sailing dinghies and skiffs as a young boy, faced new challenges sailing as an 'above knee' amputee and Kelly having never sailed, embarked on a 6 day sailing course which ultimately changed the trajectory of their lives. They bought Nashira 3 months later.

Two and a half years after buying the boat they headed off on a 10 week adventure to Tasmania, crossing Bass Strait, sailing down the East Coast, then down and around to Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour.

They will share stories and photos of their trip including the preparation around safety, communications, victualing, route and weather planning and the anxiety of the unknown.

$30.00 for Spirit of Cruising dinner and meeting in the Rani Room.
