Onshore Edition 117 – Tuesday 2 May
Message from the CEO

Following meetings with RORC and Musto in London, the Clippers in Gosport, Rolex in Geneva, then meetings with 16 sailing clubs and Associations across four Chinese cities (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Shanghai) including our participation in a China Australia Sailing Seminar and the Shanghai Boat show, I can safely say there’s no place like home!

Whilst the Commodore John Markos’s speeches and presentations were very well received in China with extensive media interest and coverage, the ‘star’ of the show was undoubtedly the Tattersalls Trophy, touring for the first time outside of Australia.

The trophy was mobbed at every venue and featured in hundreds of selfies along the way.

The hospitality was amazing and at times it felt like we were on an eating tour of China given business is often conducted over a meal…. and we talked a lot of business!

It was especially good to catch up with two of last year’s participants in the race in UBOX and ARK323, as well as many Chinese sailors who have crewed on other boats. There is undeniable passion and respect for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race within the Chinese sailing community which we as a club need to nurture and grow.

The Commodore and myself came away with a much better grasp of where Chinese Sailing is at, both at elite and grassroots levels.

We met with many organisers of youth sailing programs during our travels and all are keen to develop exchange programs with the CYCA.  What stood out for us was their desire to also teach the children to be better people through their sailing programs, with a dual emphasis on ‘values’, as well as sailing skills.

Now the real work begins to review the opportunities presented to us and develop a meaningful exchange program to not only help young Chinese sailors grow professionally and personally, but our own staff as well, as they share their skills and experiences with our Asian neighbours. We can learn from each other.

Farewell Summer

Congratulations to the winners announced at last Friday night’s Summer Prize Giving.

The CYCA would also like to acknowledge the support of its valued sponsors over the Monday and Wednesday night Twilight Series -  Club Marine, Makers Mark and Grant Thornton -  for the Short Haul and Short Ocean Point score series.

Welcome Land Rover Winter Series

As one season finishes another starts with The Goat, winning the first point score race in the 2017 Land Rover Winter Series last weekend in what was a very tight finish for the first three place-getters.

Moving Experiences!

Over the next few months there will be some disruption to the onsite parking arrangements from time to time due to the Stage 1 refurbishment of the Annex. Today the main car park was closed for the arrival of 40’ shipping containers by cranes - one for storage and one which is fitted out for our onsite shipwright to relocate into. Already on the hardstand are two demountable. These are the temporary offices for Pacific Sailing School and our Maintenance and Marina Office during the refurbishment.

A more detailed redevelopment update will be provided next week.

Ladies Night Bookings

If you have experienced any difficulties in booking for the Ladies Night on Friday 12 May from 6:00-8:00pm, please call Reception on 8292 7800 and register your name and that of your potential new member guest.

Young Guns upset form guide at Kellett Shield

Finn Tapper, Cam Gundy, Lauren Gallaway, Emma Harrison & Eric Sparkes helmed Club Marine to victory in the 2017 Kellett Shield fleet racing regatta this past weekend, hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, on what was a tricky day on Sydney Harbour.

Race 4 Frustration as Light Winds Rule Land Rover Winter Series

Race 4 of the CYCA Land Rover Winter Series was a mixed bag for competitors in the light autumn southerly wind, with the aim of avoiding the holes of no wind across the course. Hard work didn’t always pay off during the race, but a warm and sunny Sydney Harbour made it worthwhile.

Patrice makes perfect in Race 3 of the Land Rover Winter Series

After another tricky day on Sydney Harbour for Race 3 of CYCA’s Land Rover Winter Series, Tony Kirby showed just how fast his Ker 46 Patrice is, taking the win for the second week in a row.

Difficult day tests patience at the CYCA Land Rover Winter Series

The strong morning westerly winds made for a crazy day on Sydney Harbour for the Race 2 of the Land Rover Winter Series. The 96 yacht fleet started in a 13-18 knot west south-westerly wind, but the volatile conditions rapidly changed, causing mayhem and congestion around the course.

Tight at the top as The Goat claims the first win in the Land Rover Winter Series

The first pointscore race of the Land Rover Winter Series, hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, was greeted with sunny skies and building south, south westerly breeze. The 95 starters on the day jostled for the final placings in each division, where just seconds separated some.

Summer Series Prize Giving

Around 160 guests attended the CYCA’s annual Summer Series Prize Giving on Friday 28 April. Vice Commodore Paul Billingham and Rear Commodore Noel Cornish officiated proceedings and congratulated all those that received prizes.

A Presentation of an Extraordinary Journey by John Vallentine

Sailing Through Russia from the Arctic to the Black Sea

John left Sydney in 2005 on what was meant to be a summer cruise to the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands. Somehow this turned into an 11 year journey via the Southern Ocean to Patagonia and via Newfoundland to Spitsbergen and Norway to Northern Russia.

John's journey down to the Volga River from the Arctic to the Black Sea became the subject of a book and won OCC and Cruising Association awards.

The evening will concentrate on the Russian section of his extended journey.
