Onshore Edition 114 – Monday 10 April
Message from the Commodore

Dear Member,

Last week the subscription notices were mailed out with an accompanying letter to members from me.  I understand the mail-out continues and that all members should receive the communication before Easter.

If you have not received it by the weekend please contact the office.

The CEO recently mentioned the change of our software management system.  As part of the change over to the new Micropower database the team has been working hard to reconcile data and make sure it is current at changeover for the Club’s new financial year that commences in April.  Some confusion may have arisen when a system generated statement of account was sent on Friday to some members as part of the changeover.  It is not part of the subscription renewal process.

As we move to the short holiday this week, I wish you all a happy Easter, a great holiday and safe sailing.

CYCA Summer Racing Series results as tight as they could be

The 2016/2017 CYCA Summer sailing season came to an end last Saturday with the Grant Thornton Short Haul, Grant Thornton Short Ocean and Combined Ocean/Short Ocean Pointscore Series. The conditions for the final races of the series were testing, with a light 3-5 knot breeze, eventually building to 9 knots and lumpy sea conditions on Sydney Harbour.

Easter – what a wonderful opportunity for cruising to a great destination to enjoying being on the water, seeing the full moon and its beautiful reflections on the water and meeting other CYCA members.

Sugarloaf Bay is a great calm area in upper Middle Harbour suitable for rafting up, making it easy to catch up with others.  Electra will be there so why not join us for get together.   Contact John Keelty P: 0408 618 716.

For those heading north to the Hawkesbury – according to the weather predictors you could get a bit wet heading north on Friday (so sneak off on Thursday if you can).  Yulia Shutova is the CYCA Cruising contact for Pittwater M: 0435 630 332.  Once there you can pick up one of the CYCA moorings.  The CYCA has two moorings near the corner of Refuge Bay and America’s Bay – located towards the northern side of the entrance to America’s Bay.  Rafting up is encouraged and a great way to meet other members so if you find another CYCA yacht there ask to raft up – each mooring is capable of holding up to 3-4 yachts depending on conditions and size of the yachts, needless to say your responsibility to judge that.  If you find a non-CYCA yacht there you can ask them to leave or, in the spirit of cruising could suggest rafting up. If you can stay on after Easter you might be interested in joining the RSYS Annual Cruise.  For further information about this annual event contact Arthur Psaltis.

If you are going further north to lovely Lake Macquarie then contact Ted Nobbs for advice on entry and for information on where to go and what to do.  Mobile: 0400 401 304. E:, VHF: Channel 77 - Call sign Panache.

Where ever you decide to cruise to over Easter – may the winds favour you, the Easter bunny find you and have a safe and happy Easter.

A Presentation of an Extraordinary Journey by John Vallentine

Sailing Through Russia from the Arctic to the Black Sea

John left Sydney in 2005 on what was meant to be a summer cruise to the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands. Somehow this turned into an 11 year journey via the Southern Ocean to Patagonia and via Newfoundland to Spitsbergen and Norway to Northern Russia.

John's journey down to the Volga River from the Arctic to the Black Sea became the subject of a book and won OCC and Cruising Association awards.

The evening will concentrate on the Russian section of his extended journey.
