Onshore Edition 113 – Monday 3 April
Message from the CEO

Happy New Financial Year

This is week one of our new financial year and a number of new projects will start to be rolled out.  Whilst the largest of these is the refurbishment of the annex, also in May we commence installation of a new Point of Sale system.

Our old Sanyo cash registers served us well, but are now long past their use-by date. They make way for a new state-of-the-art POS system which will be integrated into the accounting system. Once up and running, a Members Loyalty Program will be initiated, something not possible with our old system. This gives us the opportunity to reward regular users of the club, provide birthday vouchers, offer promotions, Member discounts and generally value-add to Membership in ways not previously possible.

Also part of this process are new Membership cards, with the ability to print replacement cards on site, something not previously possible.

The big one, the annex refurbishment, will see our YSA office and class room relocate to the Sir David Martin Reserve from 1 May, with the Marina and Maintenance offices, the shipwright and Pacific Sailing School conducting business on the hardstand from May.  The New Beach Road Cafe closes on April 15.

You will have seen our Assistant Operations Manager Tom busily conducting group tours in the past couple of weeks. These are the tendering building companies and their sub-contractors undertaking site inspections in preparation for lodging tenders on 11 April.

The refurbishment juggernaut is rolling and there’s no stopping its progress now.

Twilight sailing is over for another season.  Many thanks to Makers Mark and Club Marine, sponsors on Monday and Wednesday night twilight series respectively.  Now its onto the Land Rover Winter Series !

New Staff Member

Today our new Business Development Manager, Kathy Symons, commenced with the CYCA.  With increasing demands on securing new revenue streams for the club to finance the continuing success of our Youth Sailing Academy and improvements to Members facilities and services, there is a need to have focused resources. Kathy will oversee all sponsorship and revenue generating activities.

If you are interested in discussing sponsorship with the CYCA and or the YSA please email Kathy – or call Kathy on mobile: 0416 174 988.

Lost property

There are some lost property items in the Duty Manager’s safe which are about to be relocated to Rose Bay police station. They include a hearing aid, gold ring with pink stones and diamonds and a wedding band with the inscription ‘Stephanie forever’ and a date.

If you know anything about these items, please contact one of the Duty Managers before the end of the week.

Post-Race Survey

The response to our inaugural survey has been very pleasing. Whilst there are two more days left to complete the survey (closes 5pm this Wednesday 5 April), we have had a 33% response rate. If you haven’t already completed the survey.  It only takes a few minutes.

Our condolences are extended to the Khoo family with the passing of Fay Khoo, a CYCA member.

On tour

My Onshore column (but not me) is taking a three-week respite as I journey to the northern hemisphere to promote the CYCA and increased participation in the RSHYR during meetings with RORC, Musto and the Clippers in the UK. I then meet up with the Commodore at Rolex in Geneva to present a review of our sponsorship which is coming up for 15 years in 2017 and discuss their involvement in the 75th Race.

From there we embark on a whistle stop tour of sailing clubs and associations in China culminating in the Commodore presenting to 100 VIPS at the Shanghai Boat Show.

And finally, you will shortly receive your annual subscription renewal information in the post, along with a donation form for the Youth Sailing Academy. Prompt payment of fees is appreciated to avoid incurring a late payment fee.

Stay dry and safe in this weather and I look forward to providing Members with many interesting updates on my return on 1 May.

Race 4 Frustration as Light Winds Rule Land Rover Winter Series

Race 4 of the CYCA Land Rover Winter Series was a mixed bag for competitors in the light autumn southerly wind, with the aim of avoiding the holes of no wind across the course. Hard work didn’t always pay off during the race, but a warm and sunny Sydney Harbour made it worthwhile.

Difficult day tests patience at the CYCA Land Rover Winter Series

The strong morning westerly winds made for a crazy day on Sydney Harbour for the Race 2 of the Land Rover Winter Series. The 96 yacht fleet started in a 13-18 knot west south-westerly wind, but the volatile conditions rapidly changed, causing mayhem and congestion around the course.

Tight at the top as The Goat claims the first win in the Land Rover Winter Series

The first pointscore race of the Land Rover Winter Series, hosted by the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, was greeted with sunny skies and building south, south westerly breeze. The 95 starters on the day jostled for the final placings in each division, where just seconds separated some.

A Presentation of an Extraordinary Journey by John Vallentine

Sailing Through Russia from the Arctic to the Black Sea

John left Sydney in 2005 on what was meant to be a summer cruise to the New Zealand sub-Antarctic islands. Somehow this turned into an 11 year journey via the Southern Ocean to Patagonia and via Newfoundland to Spitsbergen and Norway to Northern Russia.

John's journey down to the Volga River from the Arctic to the Black Sea became the subject of a book and won OCC and Cruising Association awards.

The evening will concentrate on the Russian section of his extended journey.
