Firstly, Happy New Year, as this is my first edition back in the chair after a couple of weeks off after the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.
Whilst I was away on leave, the CYCA sadly lost another two long time Members in Clifford Stanyon, a Member since 1977 who passed away on 13 January, and Jim McLaren, a Member since 1955.
I am told that ‘Jimmy’ McLaren (a retired Flag Officer) and his wife Joy spent many years working for the Club. Along with past Commodore Ron Cottee and his wife Nita, Jim and Joy were great contributors not only to the Board, but also to the Associates.
Cause for great celebration during this time amongst the Membership was when Jim's daughter, Kay (Kay Cottee), became the first woman to sail solo around the world.
I fully understand that Members, and staff for that matter, want to have the opportunity of celebrating the life of a member when they pass.
Whilst notice of the passing of Members is displayed on the Notice Board in the Club, I agree with an email that I was sent last week, that information regarding the loss of long time Members needs to be communicated more extensively.
From this edition of Onshore going forward, I will ensure that such notices are posted in this newsletter, in the ‘Notice Board’ section of the CYCA website and at the Thursday night Members Badge Draw.
Are you missing a dinghy or two?
The club is currently in possession of a range of Members items left on the hardstand, including two dinghies and backstays. Please contact Michael Neumann to arrange collection from the container in the Members car park before we have the items disposed of. With storage at a premium in the Club, we can’t afford to be storing unwanted sailing paraphernalia that does not belong to us.
2017 Farr 40 Newcastle One Design Trophy - January 21 - 22

Harry Price’s team for the M32s in Perth starting today is Murray Jones, Matt Stenta and Harry Morton. Matt Chew is also skippering a CYCA team this week, for Evan Walker. Matt is sailing with Evan’s team of Sean O’Rourke, Will Ryan, Cam Seagreen (WA) and Gemma Jones (NZL). The WMRT Swan River Match Cup is a World Tour level event and awards the top eight teams WMRT World Championship points to the leaderboard, and the finalists receive an invite to the next level event in Northern Europe in June this year. Australian Yachting Championships - 23 to 26 March and Ocean Racer of the Year Nominations
The CYCA, hosts of the 2017 Australian Yachting Championship, currently have two boats registered for the event - but I’m sure we can do better than that. If you haven’t already registered you still have time, with registrations open until the first week of March...
Nominations are also open for the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s prestigious Ocean Racer of the Year Awards which will be held on Friday 24 March 2017, during the Australian Yachting Championship. The CYCA welcomes nominations from fellow offshore clubs that have suitable candidates they feel would be eligible for these awards.
The presentation evening will include the presentation of prize winners from the 2016 CYCA Blue Water Championship season, as well as the CYCA Ocean Racer of the Year Awards. The prestigious and highly sought after awards recognise recipients from the 2015 and 2016 sailing seasons in the following categories as nominated by their peers:
- Ocean Racing Yachtsman of the Year
- Sally Gordon Memorial Trophy for the Ocean Crew Person of the Year
- Ocean Veteran of the Year
- Ocean Rookie of the Year
- Ocean Navigator of the Year
